Beginning in 1927, Gutzon Borglum sculpted the busts of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln into the side of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Presidential busts, each 60 feet high, represent 150 years of American history and symbolize this country's resonant history, robust determination, and timeless achievements.
With over 3 million visitors a year, the impressive sculpture was carved with dynamite with about 450,000 tons of rock blasted away during the process. The work was conceived by Doane Robinson, known as the “Father of Mount Rushmore,” and it was he who contracted Gutzon to do the job. Work began on October 4, 1927 and was completed on October 31, 1941. It required 14 years and 400 men and women to accomplish the impressive feat. Workmen were suspended by wire cables across the front of the mountain and not one fatality was recorded.
