Video phone calls were frequently depicted in science fiction movies from the past, but today these calls are a reality. Many people are intimidated by Skype for the simple reason that it features video calls, but it is not necessary to utilize the video function. The phone call function may be used separately, providing the user with free phone service anywhere in the world. The only requirement is that both parties have Skype.
In addition, Skype offers paid services which provide users the ability to call both land lines and cellular phones, and while there is a fee, it is quite reasonable. Here is a breakdown of the services offered by Skype, both free of charge what costs money.

Getting Started Downloading and Using Skype
It's easy to get started. Download Skype from their website here. While the built-in microphone and speakers on you computer can be used, it is worthwhile to purchase a headset/microphone combination for better quality. Good headphone/microphone headsets are available for less than $20.00. If the video call option will be used, a webcam is required. They are readily available at a reasonable cost.
Now that the program has been downloaded, choose a Skype username. This will also become the user's Skype phone number that other uses to call each other. Next add other users to the call list. If it is not known, utilize the search window to find it. Headsets can also be tested to confirm that the microphone and headphones are functioning properly, and they may be tested as many times as desired.
Simple to Use
To make a call, select the party to be reached and open their profile card. Then click on the “Call” button. The recipients computer at the other end will “ring.” When a phone call is received, the audible “ring” is heard and caller ID identifies the caller. To answer click on the “Answer” button. If the recipient doesn't answer, the caller can leave a text message. The next time Skype is opened, the program tells them whose call they have missed.
By installing Skype on your computer, users can save a lot of money they would normally spend on phone calls locally, for long distance, and internationally. In today's world of global communications, no computer user should be without Skype.
